Short answer: in 2026, painters and decorators around Newton Mearns and Giffnock charge about £196–£197 a day, roughly £25 an hour (HaMuch, from 20 and 22 local firms). HaMuch's estimate for painting and decorating a whole house in Giffnock is £2,220–£2,930. The day rate is no higher than neighbouring Paisley's on the same comparison table — what makes East Renfrewshire jobs bigger is the houses. The most common Council Tax band here is E; across Scotland it is B (National Records of Scotland, 2025).
This guide covers the East Renfrewshire council area — Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston, Busby, Eaglesham, Thornliebank, Barrhead, Neilston and Uplawmoor. For the wider picture see our Scotland-wide painting cost guide, the Glasgow cost guide and the Scotland painter day-rate guide.
Is East Renfrewshire the same as Renfrewshire?
No — they are two separate councils, and people mix them up constantly. Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston, Barrhead, Busby, Eaglesham, Neilston and Thornliebank are in East Renfrewshire. Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine are in Renfrewshire, which has its own council, its own planning department and its own conservation areas. If you live in Paisley, our Paisley & Renfrewshire cost guide is the one you want.
The difference matters for one practical reason: if your exterior job needs a planning check, you need the right council. For the day rate, it barely matters — painters here work across the whole south side of Glasgow.
What day rate do painters charge in Newton Mearns and Giffnock?
About £196–£197 a day on average, with individual firms ranging from £152 to £223. These are the only published local rates we could find — most of the rest of the first page of Google for "painters Giffnock cost" is directories that list firms but show no prices.
| Town (HaMuch page) | Day rate range | Average | Hourly | Firms listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newton Mearns | £152–£223 | £197 | £20–£28 (avg £25) | 20 |
| Giffnock | £160–£223 | £196 | £22–£29 (avg £25) | 22 |
| Giffnock (comparison row on the Newton Mearns page) | — | £189 | £24 | — |
| Paisley (same comparison row) | — | £196 | £24 | — |
Two honest caveats, because nobody else states them:
- It is one pool, not separate samples. The same named contractors recur across HaMuch's Newton Mearns, Giffnock and East Renfrewshire pages. Treat the figures as one south-side labour market, not independent town surveys — and note that HaMuch gives Giffnock as £196 on one page and £189 on another.
- The figures move. In August our Paisley guide quoted HaMuch at £172 a day (24 traders). Today HaMuch's comparison row shows Paisley at £196. We can't tell whether rates rose or the method changed, so we show both and don't average them.
How much does it cost to paint a whole house in East Renfrewshire?
HaMuch puts a full paint-and-decorate of a house in Giffnock at £2,220–£2,930 (average £2,565), and a house exterior across East Renfrewshire at £1,616–£2,184. Those are HaMuch's estimates, not quotes, and they don't say what size of house they assume — so the most useful thing to do with them is turn them into painter-days.
| Job (HaMuch estimate) | Range | Average | ÷ £196/day ≈ painter-days of money |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole house, paint & decorate (Giffnock) | £2,220–£2,930 | £2,565 | 11–15 days |
| House exterior (East Renfrewshire) | £1,616–£2,184 | £1,930 | 8–11 days |
| House exterior (Giffnock) | £1,616–£2,184 | £1,892 | 8–11 days |
The day counts include materials, so the labour days are a little lower. Notice that the two exterior pages share an identical range with different averages — a sign of one shared pricing model rather than two local samples.
This is the check to run on any quote you get: divide it by about £196 and ask what fills that many days. A large detached house with a tall stairwell can justify the top of those ranges; a two-bed flat shouldn't come near them. Our guide to checking whether a painting quote is fair walks through the method line by line.
Why do houses in East Renfrewshire cost more to paint than the Scottish average?
Because the homes are bigger, not because the painters charge more. According to the National Records of Scotland council area profile (2025), the most common Council Tax band in East Renfrewshire is band E (20.9% of homes), and 17.4% are band G. Across Scotland as a whole, the most common band is B.
Council Tax bands are based on 1991 values, so they are only a proxy for size. But a band E–G house is usually a larger semi or detached home, and every step up the bands brings more of what painter-days are spent on: more rooms and ceilings, a taller hall and landing, more doors, skirting and facings. Band H — the largest homes — is rare everywhere, 1.9% here.
So for a like-for-like room, expect Glasgow-area money. For a whole house, expect a bigger number simply because there is more house. If yours is a single-storey home, our bungalow painting cost guide covers the geometry that changes the maths.
Do you need permission to repaint a house in Eaglesham or another conservation area?
Interior decorating never needs permission; changing the exterior colour of a period property in a conservation area might. Eaglesham's historic village is a conservation area, and East Renfrewshire Council has others. Like-for-like repainting is rarely an issue, but before you change the colour of a front door, windows or render on an older property, check the council's conservation-area guidance — a phone call is cheaper than repainting twice.
Is there a free way to price the job without the directory sites?
Yes. Search "painter and decorator Newton Mearns prices" and most of the first page is Checkatrade, Houzz, Yell and Thomson Local — directories where the price is the bait and your contact details are the product. paintingquotation.com works the other way round: the free calculator gives you the number instantly, with no form, no email and no postcode, and never passes your details to anyone. Work out a fair figure first, then talk to local painters.
