How much does it cost to paint a staircase and banister in the UK? (2026)

Short answer: in 2026 a painter typically charges £350–£450 to prime and paint a typical staircase, with published prices running from £225 to £700 for a staircase and handrails in one colour (MyJobQuote, September 2026). The spindles decide where you land. A simple balustrade is about one painter-day and an ornate turned one about two (Pure Perfection Painters), and at the UK average of £173 a day (HaMuch) each extra day costs roughly another £173. A tall stairwell is a separate cost, and it is priced by access: a stairwell tower hires for about £60–£115 a week.
Almost every UK price page folds "the stairs" into one number, but it is two jobs with different cost drivers. The woodwork (banister, spindles, newel posts, strings) is slow, fiddly hand-work. The stairwell is tall walls over a drop, and the cost there is getting up to them safely. This guide prices the two separately. How much does it cost to paint a staircase?
About £350–£450 to prime and paint a typical staircase, or £400 on average (MyJobQuote, September 2026). These are the UK figures we could read in full at source:

Put the two Pure Perfection rows side by side and the balustrade alone is worth about £200, the step from £800 to £1,000+. That matches one painter-day at HaMuch's UK average of £173, plus paint. HaMuch, HomeHow and MyWorkman price the hall, stairs and landing as a single job, and we could only read them at snippet level, so we have not quoted them.
VAT: a sole trader whose VAT-taxable turnover over the last 12 months is £90,000 or less does not have to register for VAT (HMRC), so many small decorators' quotes carry none. A VAT-registered firm adds 20%.
How much does it cost to paint banisters and spindles?
Budget one painter-day (about £173 plus paint) for a simple balustrade and two (about £350) for an ornate one with turned spindles. Those are the working times Pure Perfection Painters gives: one day for a simple balustrade, two for a complex one, and half a day more for a black or contrasting handrail.
We could not find a UK firm that publishes a per-spindle price. Painters price a balustrade by the time it takes: every spindle is sanded, dusted and cut in by hand on four faces, and then done again for the second coat. The useful way to check a quote is to turn it into painter-days:

If a quote for a plain staircase comes in well above 2.5 painter-days, ask what is in it. The usual reasons are stripping, a lot of filling, a varnish-to-paint conversion or a tall stairwell. All of these are legitimate, and all of them should be itemised.
Why is a one-day staircase quoted over four days?
Paint has to dry between coats, so you are paying for the visits as well as the brush time. MyJobQuote puts a staircase at around 8 hours of work "spread over 4 days". At the £15–£40 an hour it quotes for small stair jobs, 8 hours comes to £120–£320, which is less than the £350–£450 it quotes for the same staircase. The difference is the four trips. Each one means travel, dust sheets down and up again, and a slot in the diary the painter cannot sell to anyone else.
That is also why a staircase painted on its own costs more per hour than one done as part of a whole hall. When the painter is already on site for the walls, the woodwork coats go on while other surfaces dry. If you want the stairs done, adding them to a bigger job is usually cheaper than booking them alone. Can you still use the stairs while they are being painted?
Usually, yes, but agree how before work starts. One common way is to paint the treads in two halves: alternate treads, or one side of each tread, then the rest once the first coat has dried. Keep hands off the handrail and spindles, because that is what people grab. Check the recoat time on the tin. Water-based trim paints generally recoat the same day, while oil-based gloss usually needs overnight.
Should you strip old banisters or just paint over them?
Most of the time, paint over them: sound old gloss only needs cleaning, sanding for a key and two new coats. Stripping to bare wood is what multiplies a banister quote, because it can turn a one-day balustrade into several days' work. We could not find a UK firm that publishes a price for it. If a quote includes stripping, ask for it as a separate line, in days.
Strip only when you have to:
- The paint is flaking or crazed, or so thick the spindle detail has gone. New coats on a failing base will fail too.
- You want the natural wood back. A varnished hardwood handrail is often kept bare and re-varnished, with only the spindles painted.
Going from varnish to paint? You do not need to strip. Old varnish and knotty pine do need a stain-blocking primer first, or resin and tannin can bleed through white paint. A shellac-based primer such as Zinsser B-I-N costs about £25 a litre (Wickes, September 2026).
Lead: if the house was built before the 1980s, assume the old layers of gloss on the banister may contain lead. HSE guidance (CIS79) treats pre-1980s paintwork as the risk group, and lead paint was in wide use into the 1960s. Dry-sanding or burning it off creates lead dust and fumes. That is why sound old paint is usually better cleaned, lightly keyed with a wet abrasive and overcoated than stripped. Lead test kits are sold in DIY shops, and a careful painter will ask how old the paintwork is before sanding.
How much does it cost to paint a stairwell?
No UK price list separates the stairwell walls from the rest of the job. What makes them dearer is access, and a stairwell tower hires for about £60–£115 a week. The walls normally sit inside a hall, stairs and landing quote: Pure Perfection puts the walls and ceilings of the whole area at 2–3 days' work. The stairwell is the tallest and slowest part of that, because the painter has to work safely over the drop.

Many decorators own a stair platform and will not charge for hire. For a stairwell of two storeys or more, though, MyJobQuote says professionally installed scaffolding should be used, which costs a good deal more. Ask whether access is included in the price.
Can the painter not just use a ladder? For a quick touch-up, perhaps. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 set no minimum height. HSE's working-at-height guidance says that if a task would mean staying up a leaning ladder or stepladder for more than 30 minutes at a time, alternative equipment should be considered. Painting a stairwell wall takes hours, and a stepladder cannot stand level on stairs, which is why painters use towers and platforms. If a quote for a tall stairwell looks cheap, ask how they plan to reach it.
